Newly inaugurated national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has expressed deep concern over what he describes as a mounting threat to Nigeria’s democratic order.
Speaking at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, Turaki accused certain individuals within the federal government of orchestrating violent attacks against the party. He warned that the situation has grown serious enough to warrant international monitoring.
According to him, a serving minister in the Tinubu administration allegedly led armed groups to the PDP headquarters, an action he claimed was carried out with the “active cooperation” of the police.
“I struggle to comprehend how a minister of the Federal Republic can lead armed thugs, supported by security operatives to unleash chaos at our national secretariat,” he said.
Turaki described the incidents as direct assaults on democratic institutions and appealed to the global community to take note and help prevent further deterioration.
“Our democracy is under pressure. We call on the international community to help ensure the protection of democratic norms in Nigeria,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the PDP’s resolve to defend its mandate and party structures, insisting that members remain committed to resisting any attempt to undermine the nation’s democratic system.
The PDP chairman’s remarks come amid intensifying internal disputes within the party, where rival factions are struggling for control of the national leadership and secretariat.
