Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have entered into a strategic political alliance ahead of the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move aimed at strengthening opposition prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party revealed that the agreement, reached after weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations in Abuja, would see Kwankwaso emerge as Obi’s running mate. The arrangement is designed to consolidate regional support by combining Obi’s strong following in the South-East and South-South with Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya base in the North-West.
The proposed joint ticket is expected to face stiff competition from other prominent aspirants, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, both of whom are also seeking the ADC presidential ticket.
Reacting to the development, a source within Atiku’s camp described the alliance as unsurprising, maintaining that the former vice president remains the most experienced contender with nationwide political structures. Similarly, allies of Amaechi dismissed the partnership as a “marriage of convenience,” insisting it would not significantly alter the dynamics of the primary race.
Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano, however, welcomed the arrangement, describing it as a demonstration of political maturity and a necessary step toward unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The alliance marks a notable shift in Kwankwaso’s political stance, having previously rejected the idea of serving as Obi’s deputy ahead of the 2023 elections. Analysts attribute the change to Obi’s strong electoral performance in 2023, growing calls for power rotation to the South, and the strategic need for a united opposition front against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
Key figures within both camps have confirmed that discussions are at an advanced stage. A close associate of Kwankwaso stated that the agreement has been sealed in principle, describing the joint ticket as a viable path to mounting a credible challenge in 2027. Similarly, leaders of the Obidient Movement indicated that efforts are ongoing to formalise the alliance.
Meanwhile, stakeholders within the opposition have continued to stress the importance of building strong grassroots structures to complement high-profile alliances. Analysts note that recent election outcomes across states suggest that control at ward and polling unit levels—rather than individual popularity—will be decisive in determining electoral success.
Despite optimism surrounding the emerging coalition, concerns remain about the varying levels of grassroots influence among key political figures within the ADC. Observers argue that without a cohesive and well-coordinated structure nationwide, the opposition may struggle to translate political momentum into victory at the polls.
As political realignments intensify ahead of 2027, the proposed Obi–Kwankwaso ticket is already reshaping conversations within the opposition, setting the stage for what could become a fiercely contested primary and a defining electoral battle.
