ABUJA – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed speculations that it seeks to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, following a recent surge in defections from opposition parties.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, clarified that the party welcomes new members from rival parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, but has no intention of eroding Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
Morka drew comparisons to the PDP’s dominance during its time in power, when it controlled over 28 states without accusations of attempting to monopolize the political space. He stressed that the influx of defectors simply reflects their willingness to align with the APC’s vision and governance style.
“These individuals are joining us because they want to be part of the process and share in our developmental agenda. That in no way signals a desire to eliminate political competition or transform the country into a one-party system,” Morka explained.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic structure, anchored by the Constitution and the Electoral Act, guarantees a multiparty framework that cannot be easily altered.
“Our nation is legally and constitutionally set up as a pluralistic democracy. No single party can override that reality. To even attempt such a shift would demand near-impossible constitutional changes,” he said.
The APC spokesman also dismissed concerns raised by critics, noting that the party’s focus remains on internal growth, policy delivery, and defending its democratic values rather than consolidating unchecked political power.
