The Lagos State Police Command has taken into custody popular TikTok content creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a dramatic incident in which he crashed his vehicle while livestreaming on social media.
The arrest came after a video circulated online showing the 20-year-old influencer driving at speed on the Lekki-Epe Expressway while visibly distressed and making alarming statements. Moments later, his vehicle was involved in a crash that drew the attention of bystanders and other road users.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the police said Peller was arrested after investigators reviewed footage of the incident, which occurred on Sunday. According to the police, his conduct not only violated traffic laws but also posed a serious threat to public safety.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said the action amounted to an alleged attempt at self-harm and endangered other motorists on the busy highway. She confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry and that Peller will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Olohundare Jimoh, used the incident to caution social media influencers against promoting or engaging in dangerous behaviour for online attention. He stressed that digital fame does not place anyone above the law and warned that similar conduct would attract strict legal consequences.
Separately, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the prosecution of the TikTok star for multiple traffic violations, including the use of a mobile phone while driving. In a statement, the FRSC described the incident as a disturbing example of reckless road use by public figures seeking online engagement.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern that such actions could encourage risky behaviour among young followers, noting that public roads are not meant to serve as content studios. The agency urged celebrities and influencer communities to use their platforms to promote responsible conduct instead.
The crash, which occurred on December 14, reportedly triggered the vehicle’s airbags and left Peller hospitalised. However, authorities have not disclosed details about his medical condition.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media about mental health, online pressure, and the responsibilities that come with digital influence. Peller, who recently announced the purchase of a 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV, has remained silent since the incident as investigations continue.
