The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Federal Government of failing to act on prior security warnings before the reported killing of about 170 persons by suspected terrorists in Woro Community, Kwara State.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the opposition party described the incident as a disturbing indication of the worsening security situation in the country. The PDP expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and called for urgent institutional and humanitarian interventions.
According to the party, community leaders had reportedly raised alarms about an imminent attack months before the incident, but no meaningful preventive action was taken. It argued that the subsequent deployment of security forces was belated and reactive, noting that such measures could not reverse the loss of lives or the trauma suffered by the affected community.
The PDP demanded an independent investigation into the alleged security lapses, immediate humanitarian assistance for displaced persons and survivors, and the convening of an emergency national security summit involving key stakeholders.
The party further urged the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach to addressing insecurity. This, it said, should include improved intelligence sharing among security agencies, the establishment of state police, targeted economic interventions in vulnerable areas, and regular security briefings on emerging threats.
Criticising what it described as reactionary security strategies, the PDP maintained that such approaches have continued to result in avoidable loss of lives. The party accused the current administration of prioritising politics over governance and called on the Presidency to refocus on its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
The PDP concluded by stressing that the time for excuses had passed, urging the Federal Government to take decisive action to stem the tide of insecurity across the country.
