Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi announced his defection on Wednesday, December 31, in Enugu, stating that the move is part of a broader strategy to reposition and rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Obi said, “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey.” He further pledged that the coalition would “resist election rigging by every lawful means in 2027.”
The former governor also called on opposition leaders across the country to unite under one umbrella, urging them to work together as a family under the leadership of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, to bring about national transformation.
Prominent figures at the event included former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Sam Egwu, Ben Obi, and Enyinnya Abaribe, as well as Chief Onyema Ugochukwu and several current and former lawmakers from both chambers of the National Assembly.
The defection signals a major realignment within Nigeria’s opposition politics as preparations intensify for the 2027 election.
