Tragedy struck in Oyo State as a man lost his life while attempting to rescue a goat that had fallen into a deep well in Saki, Saki West Local Government Area.

The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed the incident on Tuesday, stating that the victim, an unidentified man estimated to be about 45 years old, entered the well in an effort to save the animal but became trapped and died in the process.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service and Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan. He said the agency received a distress call at about 10:23 p.m. on Monday concerning the incident at the Mokola area of Saki.

According to him, firefighters led by PFS II Kolade Taiwo swiftly responded to the scene, secured the area with appropriate equipment, and recovered the victim’s body from the well.

In a related incident, the Fire Service also recovered the body of a 30-year-old man, Shina Adedeji, from a well at the Aaje Ikose area of Ogbomoso in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area on Tuesday morning.

Akinwande explained that Adedeji fell into the well while attempting to retrieve a fetcher. He added that the well contained ammonia gas, which contributed to the fatal outcome. Firefighters led by CFM Oladejo recovered the body after receiving a distress call at about 9:45 a.m.

The Fire Service boss cautioned residents to prioritise safety at all times and avoid taking unnecessary risks, stressing that “life has no duplicate.”

He also recalled a similar incident on January 25, 2026, when the agency recovered the body of a 33-year-old man from an abandoned well at a filling station in the Alakia–Adegbayi area of Ibadan, where the victim reportedly became trapped while cleaning debris.

The Oyo State Fire Service reiterated its call for the public to seek professional help during emergencies rather than attempting dangerous rescue efforts.
