Former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya Movement leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained that northern political stakeholders carefully evaluated possible allies before agreeing that Peter Obi was the most suitable figure to partner with ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Kwankwaso dismissed claims of an underlying rivalry between his camp and Obi’s, stressing that both leaders share a common vision for Nigeria’s future.
According to him, consultations among northern leaders convinced them that Obi stood out as the most credible and capable politician to build a strong national coalition.
Kwankwaso stated that the alliance was formed out of a genuine desire to rescue and reposition the country, adding that Obi’s leadership qualities and national appeal influenced the decision to work with him.
The former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party recently joined the National Democratic Congress alongside Obi after leaving his former party due to internal disagreements.
Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State, gained nationwide popularity during the 2023 presidential election, particularly among young voters and urban residents.
At the NDC national convention in Abuja, Kwankwaso supported the zoning of the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing the move as a necessary step toward fairness, inclusion and national unity.
Reacting to speculations about possible tensions within the alliance, he argued that disagreements between political leaders and their deputies are usually caused by greed and personal ambition rather than political structure.
Kwankwaso cited his past working relationship with former political associates as proof that strong partnerships can thrive when leaders focus on governance and collective goals.
He also traced the alliance to Nigeria’s political history, recalling the cooperation between former Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and NCNC leaders, as well as the partnership between former President Shehu Shagari and former Vice President Alex Ekwueme.
Kwankwaso insisted that the partnership with Obi was built on competence and trust rather than mere regional considerations.
The Obi-Kwankwaso alliance has continued to reshape the political landscape, attracting lawmakers and political blocs into the NDC as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Political observers believe the coalition could emerge as a major opposition force against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next general election.
