President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, directing the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers to strengthen the country’s response to escalating insecurity. This brings the total planned police intake to 50,000.
The President authorised the Armed Forces and Department of State Services (DSS) to expand personnel and intensify operations in areas facing heightened threats. He also approved the use of NYSC camps as temporary training centres, while officers recalled from VIP duties will undergo rapid retraining before redeployment.
Tinubu further empowered the DSS to deploy forest guards to combat bandits and terrorists in Nigeria’s forests. He commended recent successful rescues, including schoolgirls in Kebbi and worshippers in Kwara, and pledged continued efforts to free students still held in Niger State.
The President encouraged states to consider state police, urged communities and religious institutions to improve security, and called on herders to adopt ranching, surrender illegal weapons, and cooperate with the Livestock Ministry to prevent clashes with farmers.
He concluded by appealing to Nigerians to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and support security forces in restoring peace nationwide.
