The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has urged party stakeholders and delegates to prioritise merit and competence in electing new national officers during the party’s upcoming National Convention.
In a statement issued by its protem national coordinator, Barr. Obinna Nwachukwu, the group emphasized the need for leaders to begin mobilization ahead of the convention scheduled to hold from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025. The CP-PDP stressed the importance of putting aside sentiments and focusing on the broader interests of the party and the country.
The CP-PDP commended the PDP for successfully holding its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last Tuesday, during which the decision to conduct an early National Convention was ratified. The group welcomed this move as a strategic and timely step toward repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Describing the forthcoming convention as a critical moment for the PDP, Nwachukwu noted that most party members and Nigerians see it as a necessary process to usher in a new era of purposeful leadership within the party.
He expressed confidence in the capacity of the Governor Ahmadu Fintiri-led National Convention Organizing Committee and the Governor Douye Diri-led Zoning Committee to conduct a transparent, credible, and inclusive convention that upholds the democratic ideals of the PDP.
“The Conference urges party leaders to recognise that Nigerians expect the PDP to uphold merit, experience, institutional memory, and dedication over sectional or divisive considerations in electing its national officers,” Nwachukwu said.
He further stressed that the leadership to emerge from the convention will bear the critical responsibility of steering the party toward success in the 2027 elections, a challenge that requires competence and proven political acumen.
The CP-PDP expressed optimism that the August National Convention will mark a turning point for the party, providing a foundation to rebuild and offer a people-oriented alternative governance model for the country.
