Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has renewed his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration following another collapse of Nigeria’s national electricity grid, the second incident recorded in January 2026.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi revisited a key promise made by President Tinubu during the 2022 presidential campaign, stressing that the continued instability in the power sector stands in sharp contrast to that commitment.
According to Obi, Tinubu had assured Nigerians that failure to deliver steady electricity within his first four years in office would be sufficient reason for voters to deny him a second term.
He noted that despite this pledge, the national grid has collapsed twice in January alone, even before the month ended, adding that the system reportedly experienced about twelve collapses throughout 2025.
Obi described the repeated grid failures as deeply troubling and a clear indication that the electricity challenge facing the country remains unresolved.
“This situation is a direct contradiction of the promise made to Nigerians and should concern every citizen who desires a functional and productive nation,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised the president’s frequent overseas trips, pointing out that Tinubu was currently on a visit to Turkey while critical issues at home, particularly in the power sector, persisted.
Drawing a comparison between Nigeria and Turkey, Obi highlighted the significant disparity in electricity generation between both countries, noting that while Turkey, with a population far smaller than Nigeria’s, generates over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, Nigeria continues to struggle with a fraction of that capacity.
He described the contrast as painful and reflective of misplaced priorities.
Obi called on the president to concentrate on addressing Nigeria’s pressing internal challenges rather than engaging in frequent foreign travels, urging him to remain in the country and tackle the nation’s problems head-on.
He further expressed concern that national attention appears increasingly focused on the 2027 general elections instead of the urgent task of governance and service delivery.
Obi urged Nigerians to demand accountability from their leaders, stressing that responsible governance remains the only path to easing the hardship faced by citizens.
According to him, collective action is needed to confront poor leadership and rescue Nigerians from the suffering and indignity caused by persistent governance failures.
