A gas explosion at a filling station in Thinkers Corner, Enugu State, was swiftly brought under control on Thursday afternoon by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Enugu Operations Office, in partnership with the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (ENSEMA) and the Fire Service.
The incident occurred around 3:03 p.m. at the Total Filling Station located on Alor Street, off Abakpa, involving a fully loaded liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker during the discharge of its contents.
According to a statement from NEMA, the explosion happened while the tanker was offloading gas. Although the exact cause has yet to be determined, early indications suggest possible lapses in safety procedures during the operation.
Emergency responders quickly contained the fire, taking steps to secure the area and enforce safety protocols.
“On arrival, the team immediately cordoned off the scene, disconnected the tanker’s battery, and cooled the partially filled gas tank. Thanks to their quick actions, the fire was fully contained without any casualties. All remaining flames were extinguished during the operation,” NEMA reported.
The coordinated effort successfully concluded at approximately 4:44 p.m., NEMA added.
