Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been hospitalised following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday in the Makun area, near the Danco Filling Station and ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola. She disclosed that Joshua and other injured occupants were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck. The vehicle was reportedly part of a two-car convoy, with a Pajero SUV trailing behind as security backup.
An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, said Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the Lexus died at the scene. He explained that the boxer was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him, while two others sat in the front.
Rescue efforts were initiated by eyewitnesses before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene. The deceased were identified as the front-seat passenger and another occupant seated beside Joshua.
Confirming the development, the police stated that investigations were ongoing and assured that further updates would be provided in due course.
