The Federal Government has raised flood alerts for 15 of the 19 northern states, urging communities at risk to take urgent precautionary steps.
In a circular issued through the Federal Ministry of Environment, the government warned that heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the region between August 10 and 14, 2025, which could trigger severe flooding.
The alert, released via the National Flood Early Warning (FEW) Centre and signed by Malam Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, identified high-risk states as Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kebbi.
Other states placed on red alert include Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Kwara.
Prominent towns and communities highlighted as being at significant risk include Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau, and Sokoto. Kebbi State tops the list with the most towns under watch—about 10 in total—among them Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega, and Birnin Kebbi.
Bokani urged residents and state authorities to act swiftly to protect lives and property, while also calling for prompt feedback from stakeholders to enable a rapid response to any incidents.
The ministry recalled that just last month, it issued similar early warnings to 11 states, advising state environment ministries and stakeholders to adopt preventive measures.
