An elder statesman and former governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, has charged delegates at the 2026 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to seize the moment to reposition the party as Nigeria’s foremost platform for inclusive governance, unity, and people-oriented leadership.

Speaking to journalists in Enugu, Nwobodo called for a renewed commitment to internal democracy, stressing that the credibility of the PDP as a national institution depends largely on the transparency and fairness of its internal processes.

According to him, the convention presents a defining opportunity for the party to demonstrate its enduring values and reaffirm its identity as a truly democratic movement driven by the will of the people.

“Nigeria’s diversity is our greatest strength, not our weakness,” he declared. “As a party that has historically unified Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional lines, the PDP must once again rise to the occasion and show leadership rooted in inclusion, justice, and equity.”

He emphasized that the conduct of elections into party offices must reflect the democratic ideals the PDP has consistently championed, noting that Nigerians are watching closely and expect nothing short of a credible and transparent process.

“The test before us is internal democracy; it is a test of our credibility as a party,” Nwobodo stated. “The election of party officials must reflect the very democracy we promise Nigerians. Let this convention stand as proof that the PDP remains the true custodian of democratic values in our country.”

The PDP chieftain further praised aspirants seeking various party positions, describing their participation as a testament to the vibrancy, resilience, and internal strength of the party. He urged them to conduct their campaigns with dignity, focusing on ideas, vision, and constructive engagement rather than division.

“To all aspirants, your willingness to serve is commendable, and your commitment strengthens our party,” he said. “Let this be a contest of ideas, not a source of division. Let it be a competition of vision, not conflict. This is how great parties grow and inspire confidence among the people.”

In a strong appeal for unity, Nwobodo cautioned against post-election rancour, urging members to close ranks once the process is concluded and work collectively towards rebuilding and strengthening the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.

“When the contest is concluded, let us come together, not as factions, but as one united PDP, committed to the progress of Nigeria and the welfare of its citizens,” he added.

Reaffirming the PDP’s historical role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey, Nwobodo expressed confidence that the party remains the most credible vehicle for national development, with the experience, structure, and grassroots support needed to address the country’s pressing challenges.

As a founding member of the PDP, he underscored the party’s legacy of promoting national unity, economic growth, and democratic consolidation, urging members to remain steadfast in their belief that the PDP will once again lead Nigeria toward stability, prosperity, and inclusive governance.

Observers say the remarks by Nwobodo have further energized delegates at the convention, reinforcing optimism that the PDP is on a renewed path to consolidation, cohesion, and a strong return to national prominence.
