ENUGU - A new window of opportunity has opened for youths in Enugu State as the maiden Peter Eze Youth Connect 2026 brought together young people, government officials and opportunity providers in a drive to improve access to federal employment, scholarships, grants and skills-development programmes.

The landmark youth-focused gathering, held in Enugu, was anchored on the theme, “Beyond Quotas: Unlocking Opportunities for Enugu Youths Through the Federal Character Commission.”

The event featured the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, as keynote speaker, alongside the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State in the commission, Hon. Peter Ogbonna Eze, and other prominent stakeholders.

A major message from the event was that lack of political connections should no longer be an excuse for young people to remain outside the circle of available opportunities.

Omidiran urged Enugu youths to position themselves for opportunities by acquiring relevant skills, preparing professional profiles and applying for vacancies and programmes whenever they are advertised.

She stressed the importance of transparency in recruitment into federal institutions, noting that qualified Nigerians should have a fair opportunity to compete for available positions.

Eze, who conceived the initiative, said the programme was designed to tackle what he described as a major challenge confronting young people - the information and access gap.

According to him, many youths miss valuable opportunities because they either do not know where such opportunities exist or wrongly assume that government jobs and programmes are reserved for people with political connections.

He encouraged participants to reject that mindset and actively pursue opportunities available through federal ministries, departments and agencies.

Eze also cautioned youths against falling victim to fraudsters and middlemen who demand money in exchange for government employment, urging them to rely on official channels when seeking jobs and other government opportunities.

Participants were exposed to opportunities involving grants, scholarships, fellowships, training and other career-development programmes, with Eze announcing that five participants would be selected for full scholarship opportunities to study abroad.

The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who also addressed the gathering, commended the initiative and challenged young people to acquire the skills required to compete in an increasingly competitive economy.

He emphasised that opportunities could only produce results when beneficiaries were adequately prepared to take advantage of them.

For Eze, however, the bigger objective is to create a continuing platform through which Enugu youths can access credible information and connect directly with opportunities that can change their lives.

He urged beneficiaries of the initiative to become channels of opportunity for others, stressing the importance of creating a culture in which young people do not only seek personal advancement but also help others to rise.

The maiden Peter Eze Youth Connect has therefore positioned itself as more than another youth empowerment gathering. It represents an attempt to move youth engagement from speeches and promises to information, access and measurable opportunities.

For many participants, the message was clear: the first step to accessing an opportunity is knowing that it exists - and being prepared to apply.
