The crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress has escalated into a major internal conflict, with three rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The struggle involves camps aligned with David Mark, Nafiu Gombe, and former presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu, alongside his associate Kingsley Temitope Ogga. Each faction has traded accusations of illegality and attempts to seize control of party structures.
Backers of the Mark-led group have alleged interference by the All Progressives Congress and the presidency, suggesting some actors are working to weaken the party in favour of President Bola Tinubu. These claims have been rejected by both the APC and government officials, who insist the ADC should resolve its internal disagreements.
Tensions intensified after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered all parties to maintain the status quo and suspend congresses and conventions pending the resolution of ongoing suits. Despite this directive, one faction went ahead with a national convention, deepening the rift.
The Kachikwu-led bloc condemned the move, describing it as destabilising, while the Mark faction defended its actions, insisting they complied with the party’s constitution and due process.
On its part, the Gombe faction has dismissed the entire process as invalid, arguing that constitutional procedures were ignored and maintaining that Gombe rightfully assumed leadership as deputy national chairman.
Adding another layer to the crisis, the Kachikwu/Temitope group has rejected both factions, portraying itself as a reform-driven movement committed to restoring internal democracy within the party.
With each bloc advancing its own interpretation of legitimacy, the ADC now operates as three parallel entities, each claiming authority.
Observers warn that the prolonged dispute could weaken the party’s standing as an opposition force, as legal battles persist and reconciliation efforts remain stalled.
The spotlight now shifts to the Supreme Court, whose anticipated ruling is expected to play a decisive role in resolving the leadership crisis and shaping the party’s future.
