Cameroon’s long-serving President, Paul Biya, has been sworn in for an unprecedented eighth term at the age of 92, pledging to restore order and unity following weeks of violent post-election protests.
Speaking during his inauguration at the National Assembly in Yaoundé, Biya condemned what he described as “irresponsible politicians” for inciting unrest, promising that “order will reign” in the country.
The ceremony came amid widespread anger over the disputed election results, which left at least 14 people dead and over 1,200 arrested, according to the National Human Rights Commission. Opposition groups claim the figures are higher.
Biya, in power since 1982, officially secured 54% of the vote, defeating opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who polled 35%. Bakary rejected the outcome, alleging electoral fraud and calling for international sanctions on Cameroonian officials.
While Biya praised the national electoral body, Elecam, for conducting what he termed a “satisfactory” election, he sidestepped allegations of excessive force used by security agencies against demonstrators.
The president urged citizens to move beyond political divisions and focus on rebuilding a “united, stable, and prosperous Cameroon.” He also promised to address issues affecting women, youth, corruption, and insecurity.
Meanwhile, Bakary’s camp has called for a general strike in Garoua and Douala to protest the swearing-in, vowing to “resist until his victory is recognised.”
Biya’s re-election extends one of the world’s longest presidencies, fueling debate about the country’s democratic trajectory. Critics accuse him of ruling with an iron hand and stifling dissent throughout his four-decade rule.
As Cameroon begins another term under Biya’s leadership, observers say the coming months will test his ability to deliver on promises of reconciliation and stability in a deeply divided nation.
