Awgu, Enugu State — The Ezineze Mgbidi Autonomous Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State has been plunged into mourning following the death of its traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Igwe P. D. Uzochukwu (Ezudo I of Mgbidi), barely 24 hours before his 90th birthday and 38th coronation anniversary.
The monarch passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness, at a time when preparations were in top gear for the grand celebrations scheduled for Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Billboards announcing the landmark birthday had already been mounted across the community, while many indigenes had returned home in anticipation of the event.
Confirming the development, Prince Emeka Uzochukwu disclosed that the palace had not anticipated the monarch’s death. According to him, the late Igwe had gone for a routine medical check-up to confirm his fitness for the celebrations when his health suddenly worsened.
He said the revered traditional ruler died in a private hospital in Enugu metropolis, describing the moment as shocking and deeply painful to the family.
“Being with him at the hospital before he passed, it was difficult to come to terms with the reality that the Igwe was gone,” Prince Emeka said.
Meanwhile, community members observed a minute of silence during a town hall meeting held at Central School, Mgbidi, in honour of the late monarch.
The President General of the Mgbidi Central Union, Theophilus Nzeh, Esq., described the death as a monumental loss to the two autonomous communities in Mgbidi. He commended the late Igwe for his selfless leadership, commitment to peace, and lasting contributions to the development of the area.
Igwe Uzochukwu, who reigned for 38 years after succeeding Chief G. I. Oko, played a key role in the creation of the Ezineze and Ezineri autonomous communities. He will be remembered for his vision, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of his people.
