The Enugu State Government has placed embargo on the issuance of building clearance and building approvals for properties without state title documents, expressing dismay that a significant number of lands within the> state had been issued building approvals without any state title document.

The directive was given by Governor Peter Mbah on Tuesday, according to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

“All properties seeking building approvals should possess valid, appropriate, and registered State Title documents like a Certificate of Occupancy, old Deed of Lease, Deed of Assignment, Deed of Gift, Deed of Vesting Assent, Deed of Sub-lease, Power of Attorney, and Customary Right of Occupancy before Building Approval should be granted”, the statement read in part.

According to the statement, the embargo was to halt unauthorized development while encouraging property owners to obtain proper documentation, promoting legal land ownership, and ensuring that projects align with state regulations.

“All relevant authorities are required to adhere strictly with this directive. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action and possible sanction against such personnel”, the government warned.
