The ongoing social media confrontation involving Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti and Grammy-winning artiste Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, shows no signs of easing, despite attempts by various stakeholders to broker peace.
Seun Kuti has dismissed all conciliatory efforts, a stance that appears to be echoed by Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, who have remained active participants in the online exchanges.
Reacting to claims by some observers that Wizkid’s tattoo of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti signifies respect and reverence, Seun Kuti offered a sharp rebuttal in a video shared on his Instagram page.
According to him, the era of what he described as attempts to replace or commercially exploit his father’s legacy has come to an end.
“What I want to happen has finally happened. Your game of replacing Fela has been stopped. Your infiltration of my family has been stopped, and nobody in the world will ever take you seriously when you try to leech off that legacy again,” Seun said.
He further warned the ‘Ojuelegba’ singer to remove the tattoo of Fela from his hand, stating that failure to do so would result in a lack of progress associated with that hand. He also advised Wizkid to consider replacing the tattoo with an image of his own father, while questioning his status in comparison to artistes who openly acknowledge Fela’s influence, including Burna Boy.
The dispute has since drawn reactions from other members of the Kuti family, some of whom have also issued stern warnings to Wizkid.
Meanwhile, amid the controversy, Wizkid recently released his highly anticipated documentary, Long Live Lagos, which premiered on HBO a few days ago.
