The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon hold a meeting with former United States President Donald Trump to address rising concerns over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, following Trump’s recent comments accusing the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to attacks on Christians.
According to Bwala, the forthcoming discussion will centre on counterterrorism cooperation and efforts to correct misconceptions about terrorist activities in the country.
“Both President Tinubu and President Trump share a mutual interest in the global fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism. President Trump supported Nigeria by authorising arms sales, which President Tinubu has effectively utilised in the ongoing war against terror,” Bwala stated.
Trump had earlier threatened to suspend U.S. aid and consider military action against Nigeria if killings of Christians allegedly continue. His comments were prompted by claims from U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore, who described Nigeria as the most dangerous place in the world for Christians and called for its redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) — a claim Nigeria’s federal government has repeatedly refuted.
Despite the tension, Bwala maintained that both leaders remain committed to advancing global peace and security. He added that the meeting would provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation and clarify the true nature of Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
