The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disqualified six additional political associations from the ongoing registration process, even as eight others successfully completed the first phase.
This was disclosed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement on Thursday following the commission’s meeting of October 30, 2025.
According to Olumekun, the review meeting evaluated progress since an earlier update issued on September 11. Fourteen associations had been pre-qualified after a briefing held on September 17, with a digital portal opened for document submissions from September 18 to October 18.
By October 19, eight of the pre-qualified associations had completed all required submissions.
Olumekun listed the successful groups as: All Democratic Alliance, Citizens Democratic Alliance, Abundance Social Party, African Alliance Party, Democratic Leadership Alliance, Green Future Party, National Democratic Party, and Peoples Freedom Party.
He added that the next phase would involve a comprehensive verification of documents to ensure full compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
“The next step in the registration process is the detailed assessment and verification of the information and documents submitted by each association,” Olumekun stated. “This stage will ensure conformity with legal and regulatory provisions.”
The commissioner reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic culture.
So far, the commission has received a total of 171 applications from associations seeking to be registered as political parties.
