The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday night convened an emergency meeting with key Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders drawn from the 36 states and the FCT, warning that the party’s proposed national convention may be declared invalid if certain conditions are not met.

At the closed-door session, Wike outlined a six-point demand, insisting that strict compliance was necessary to safeguard the unity and legitimacy of the opposition party.

The demands include:

1. Conducting fresh congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states in accordance with existing court rulings.

2. The urgent organization of a new South East Zonal Congress.

3. Respecting the South South Congress held in Calabar, which has already been validated by the courts.

4. Immediate conduct of the Ekiti LGA congresses, in line with judicial directives.

5. An end to any form of micro-zoning of offices, beyond the general zoning formula already adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

6. Retaining the national chairmanship position in the North Central, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention.

Wike, who has recently been vocal about internal party issues, emphasized that failure to implement these resolutions could throw the party into further crisis and undermine the credibility of the national convention.

Party insiders who attended the meeting disclosed that while some stakeholders welcomed the demands as necessary for fairness and stability, others viewed them as a veiled threat that could deepen factional divides within the PDP.

The development comes as preparations for the PDP’s national convention intensify, with several camps jostling for control of key party structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
