A United States congressman, Riley Moore, has faulted China for cautioning Washington against a possible military intervention in Nigeria, following reports of widespread attacks on Christian communities.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Moore declared support for President Donald Trump’s position on defending Christians in Nigeria, insisting that China has no authority to dictate America’s foreign policy.

“President Trump is absolutely right to stand up for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are enduring severe persecution, and even martyrdom, for their faith,” Moore said.

He accused Beijing of double standards, pointing to its poor human rights record and the persecution of religious minorities within China.

“China will not dictate our foreign policy, and we refuse to be lectured by a Communist regime that imprisons pastors and detains ethnic minorities in camps,” Moore added.

China had earlier warned the United States against “unwarranted interference” in Nigeria’s domestic affairs after Trump threatened to intervene militarily to protect Christian populations.

Responding to questions at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed Beijing’s alliance with Abuja, saying China “firmly supports Nigeria’s government in pursuing a development path suited to its national realities.”

She added that China opposes “any form of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations under the guise of religion or human rights.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has urged President Trump to respect the country’s sovereignty and avoid any military involvement on its soil.
