Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to remember him in their daily prayers, citing the challenges he faces in upholding the law against influential individuals who act with impunity.
During his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike specifically addressed the issue of affluent tax evaders residing in the capital’s high-end areas, questioning their frequent claims of speaking for the underprivileged.
He urged Nigerians to scrutinize the socio-economic composition of Abuja’s wealthy districts.
“How many poor people live in Maitama or Wuse? These rich individuals pay people to speak to the press as though they represent the interests of the poor,” Wike said.
“Consider this: how many people can afford a house in Maitama? How many underprivileged Nigerians run businesses in Maitama, the Central Business District, Wuse, or Garki?”
Drawing comparisons with developed nations, the minister highlighted the importance of tax compliance, noting that tax enforcement is taken more seriously than even violent crimes in some countries.
“Every government faces funding issues. That’s why, in developed countries, tax matters are not taken lightly. Sometimes, one could escape punishment for murder, but not for tax evasion,” he added.
Wike also spoke on the personal cost of confronting entrenched interests, appealing for public support.
“People like us need your daily prayers because of what we witness and endure. Whenever we take the right decisions, we face backlash and criticism from many quarters,” he said.
He encouraged citizens to question the motives behind resistance from powerful individuals opposing reforms.
“Don’t just listen to the elite who believe they are above the law—take the time to ask questions,” the minister concluded.
