The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 13 new cases of Lassa fever, including four deaths, for the 40th epidemiological week (September 29 to October 5, 2025). The new infections were recorded in Ondo and Edo States, two of the hardest-hit regions this year.
According to the NCDC, Nigeria has now recorded 924 confirmed cases and 172 deaths across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas in 2025, with a Case Fatality Rate of 18.6 percent, up from 17 percent during the same period last year. A total of 117 suspected cases were reported during the week, bringing the yearly total to 8,041.
The agency noted that over 90 percent of confirmed cases are concentrated in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi States, which remain the epicenters of the outbreak. The NCDC reiterated its commitment to strengthening surveillance, laboratory testing, risk communication, and infection prevention and control nationwide.
Health authorities urged Nigerians to maintain clean environments, avoid contact with rodents, store food properly, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as persistent fever, sore throat, chest pain, or vomiting occur. The NCDC also emphasized ongoing collaboration with state health ministries, development partners, and communities to ensure effective response and care for those affected.
